How a check works

Each page asks for the job’s measurements once and runs the calculators this site publishes for every line a quote for that job carries. Where a legitimate choice moves a figure — a cutting allowance, a lay pattern, a product’s coverage — the line shows a range with both ends named. Type the figure your quote states and it is placed inside, above or below it.

What these pages will not tell you

What the work should cost. An installed price varies by a factor of two between markets, moves with the season, and cannot see your access or your specification — so a confident figure nobody can defend leaves you worse placed than none, because it is the number you will repeat.

The part that travels

A quantity is different. If a room is four metres by three and a half, the boards it takes are the boards it takes, in Texas and in Manchester equally. So these pages check the part that travels and stay silent on the part that does not.

What a quote leaves out

Every page also lists what its check does not cover — the preparation, the access, the parts of the job no measurement describes. That list is usually worth more than the numbers: a generous allowance costs a little and is visible before anybody starts; an omission becomes a cost halfway through, when the choice has gone.

Written so you can show it to them

Nothing on these pages characterises anybody. Every line states the assumption behind its own figure and at least one ordinary reason a real quote might differ, and every prompt is a question rather than an instruction. A tradesman who is asked what board size a price assumes answers in a sentence.

The calculators these pages run are published individually, with the working shown, and the job takeoffs each check comes from show every quantity for the job. Nothing you type on any of them is uploaded.
