Job takeoff
Asphalt shingle roof takeoff
Shingles, underlayment, ice-dam membrane, ridge cap and ridge vent from the roof's footprint.
A takeoff is the trade word for the shopping list a job produces — every material, and how much of each, worked out by its own cited calculator.

Roofing Shingle CalculatorShingles from the outline to the drip edge, at the pitch above. The 10% allowance covers cutting on a plain gable: the ridge cap is its own row and starter strip is bought separately, so raise it if you cut starters or caps from field shingles, or for hips and valleys.

Roofing Underlayment CalculatorUnderlayment over the SLOPED area, less the eave strip the ice-dam membrane covers; it laps onto the membrane rather than doubling it. To leave the membrane out, set the eaves with ice-dam membrane to 0 rather than unticking its row, or this row stays short by the strip. Where each half of the roof is no wider on plan than that strip (1.16 m / 3 ft 10 in at the opening figures), the membrane covers the whole slope and this row does not appear.

The overlap allowance: the calculator's working figure, a trade convention. Change any other figure on the Roofing Underlayment Calculator | 1 roll | |
Roof Eave Ice Dam Protection Membrane FootprintAlong the eaves counted above — both eaves of a gable by default, twice the footprint length — from the drip edge to the reach past the wall's inside face, so its overhang box carries the overhang and the wall thickness together. Where freeze-thaw does not call for it, set the eaves with ice-dam membrane to 0 rather than unticking this row: the underlayment row subtracts this strip whenever that count is above 0. On a roof so narrow that the strip reaches the ridge (the underlayment row then drops out), this row counts the full strip anyway and can come to more than the roof: order no more than the roof area.

Estimates, not a quote. Each row gives its base, the allowance on top, the adjusted figure and what to order; change an allowance on the row, or open its reasoning to see every figure it rests on. A trade's own page carries what it does not cover — open the one you are about to order against.

About this job
A roof is bigger than the building it sits on, and that is the first thing an estimate has to get right. The footprint here is the roof's outline on plan measured to the drip edge, overhangs included, not the wall line you can tape from the ground; the roof area is that outline multiplied by a slope factor, which at a 6:12 pitch is about 1.12 and at 12:12 is over 1.41. The shingle and ice-dam rows take the pitch you enter and apply the slope themselves. The underlayment row cannot — it takes an area, so the slope factor here must be the one for that same pitch.
The ice-dam row is a climate question wearing a quantity's clothing. Where the winter produces freeze-thaw, the membrane has to reach far enough up the slope to pass the inside face of the exterior wall, which is a depth measured from the eave rather than a percentage of the roof. In a warm climate the row is not needed at all, and the honest thing is to exclude it rather than to order it: set the eaves with ice-dam membrane to 0, rather than unticking the row, and it drops out with the underlayment made whole again.
The ice-dam row also runs along every eave, not one. A gable has two, one down each long side, so the row below takes the footprint length once for each; a hip roof has eaves on all four sides, the whole perimeter, which this gable takeoff does not model. The underlayment starts where the membrane stops, so its row is the sloped area less the membrane strip rather than both over the same eave.
The ridge is two products, and the vent does not replace the cap. A ridge vent goes down first, over a slot cut back from the ridge board; the cap shingles go on last and cover the whole ridge, over the vent where there is one. Choosing a vent adds a line to the order rather than swapping one, and because the slot stops short of the ridge ends, a vent row sized to the full ridge carries a little spare.
How each line reads
- Base
- What the calculator gives for these dimensions, before anything is added.
- Allowance
- Cutting waste, a lap or spare stock — named, with where it comes from, and changeable on the row.
- Adjusted
- The base with its allowance on top.
- Order
- What to buy: the adjusted figure in whole boards, bags, rolls or lengths.
The order this happens in
Quantities do not tell you the sequence, and on this job the sequence is where the money goes wrong.
- Strip to the deck and check it — a re-roof over rot is a re-roof done twice.
- Fit the drip edge at the eave, then the ice-dam membrane, then the drip edge at the rake over the top of it.
- Lay the underlayment up the slope, lapped so water runs over each joint rather than into it.
- Snap the course lines rather than trusting the shingle's own alignment marks.
- Cut the ridge slot before capping, and only where the vent will run.
- Cap the ridge last, working away from the prevailing wind.
What this takeoff does not cover
- The deck below, its condition and any repair to it.
- Valleys, hips, step flashing, chimneys, pipe boots and every other penetration — each is a detail rather than an area.
- Drip edge, starter strip (the shingle row's allowance covers cutting only) and hip and ridge accessories other than the cap counted here.
- Intake ventilation at the soffit, which a ridge vent needs and without which it can pull air from the house.
- Tear-off, disposal and whatever the deck turns out to need.

- Which calculators does the asphalt shingle roof takeoff run?
- 5 calculators, one to a line: Roofing Shingle Calculator, Roofing Underlayment Calculator, Roof Eave Ice Dam Protection Membrane Footprint, Roof Ridge Cap Calculator, Ridge Vent Linear Footage Calculator. Each has a page of its own with its formula and its sources; the takeoff runs them all on one set of dimensions.

- 5 things, each named on this page: The deck below, its condition and any repair to it; Valleys, hips, step flashing, chimneys, pipe boots and every other penetration; Drip edge, starter strip (the shingle row's allowance covers cutting only) and hip and ridge accessories other than the cap counted here; Intake ventilation at the soffit, which a ridge vent needs and without which it can pull air from the house; Tear-off, disposal and whatever the deck turns out to need.
- Can I check a quote for this job against the takeoff?
- Yes. The asphalt shingle roof quote check reads a quote's lines against these same calculators and your measurements, and reports what it leaves out, what it adds and what to ask. It reads quantities, never prices.
