Field Tools

Eight instruments built out of hardware you already have in your pocket. They use the phone's sensors, its camera and its screen to measure things on site — a level, a clinometer, a calibrated ruler, a way to get dimensions out of a photograph — and then hand the result straight to the calculators that turn it into a quantity.

Nothing installs, nothing signs in, and nothing is uploaded: this site has no server to upload to. Once a page has loaded it keeps working with no signal, which is usually where you need it.

Motion sensors

Read the phone's own accelerometer and gyroscope. These need a phone or tablet held against the thing you are measuring — a desktop browser exposes the API but never reports a reading.

Digital Bubble Level

Turn your phone into a spirit level to check whether a wall, shelf or surface is truly plumb or level.

A two-axis spirit level driven by the phone's orientation sensors. The bubble drifts toward the low edge exactly as a vial level does, and the phone gives a short haptic pulse the moment both axes fall within half a degree of level — so you can feel the reading while your eyes are on the work.

Roof Pitch & Slope Clinometer

Lay your phone against a rafter, pipe or driveway and read the slope in degrees, percent grade and rise-over-run at once.

One angle, three ways of expressing it. Roofers work in rise-over-run, drainage is specified in percent grade, and structural drawings use degrees — this reads the phone's tilt and shows all three simultaneously, with a lock button so you can take the reading in an awkward spot and read it once you are back down.

Camera & photos

Work from the rear camera or a photo you already took. The image never leaves the device; there is no upload and no server to upload to.

A layout mock-up you hold up to the wall. Choose stack bond, stretcher bond, herringbone or a plain grid, set the density, and the pattern draws over the live rear camera view so you can judge whether a bond direction works with the room's proportions before committing to a cut list.

Photo Takeoff

Measure real lengths from a site photo by calibrating against a bank card or a sheet of paper in the shot.

Take a photo with a card or an A4 sheet lying on the surface, drag across the reference to set the scale, then measure anything else in the same plane. It is the fastest way to get a dimension off something you have already left — a wall you photographed last week, or a detail you could not reach with a tape.

Screen & modelling

Use the display itself as the instrument, or build geometry on it. These are the tools that work just as well on a laptop as on a phone.

Screen Ruler & Protractor

Calibrate your screen against a bank card and use it as a real ruler in millimetres or inches, plus a digital protractor.

Every display reports a different pixel density, and browser zoom changes it again — so an on-screen ruler is only honest if you calibrate it. Hold any ISO ID-1 card (a bank card, a driving licence, a hotel key) against the screen, slide until the edges line up, and the ruler is then correct for that device. The protractor shares the same calibration for angle work.

3D Blueprint & CAD Export

Model a slab, footing, wall panel or beam in 3D and export it as DXF, OBJ or STL.

Enter three dimensions in your market's own units, orbit the model to check it reads the way you expect, and export a real CAD file — DXF for AutoCAD and drawing packages, OBJ or STL for 3D printing and visualisation. The exported geometry carries the numbers you typed with no unit conversion applied, because a file that silently changed units would be worse than one that matches your input.

Tape Measure Calculator

Add and subtract feet-inches-fractions exactly — 5' 3-7/8 plus 2' 11-5/16 with no decimal rounding.

The arithmetic a carpenter does forty times a day, done the way the tape shows it. Every measurement is held as an exact count of sixty-fourths of an inch, so adding a whole cut list drifts by nothing — the classic failure this replaces is 7/8 becoming 0.87 on a phone calculator and coming back as the wrong sixteenth. A running strip shows each entry with the total after it, any line can be removed without retyping the rest, and a layout helper splits the total into equal spaces with marks you take off one tape hook.

Microphone

Analyse a room through the device microphone. Audio is processed frame by frame in memory and never recorded to a file.

Acoustic Analyzer

Measure room reverberation with your microphone, and estimate wall sound isolation from surface mass.

Three separate things, kept visibly separate because their trustworthiness differs. A live spectrum and relative level from the microphone; an RT60 reverberation time measured from the decay after a hand clap; and Sabine RT60 plus a mass-law STC estimate computed from geometry you type, with no microphone involved at all.

The built-in cost estimates are national baselines, and no one buys at a national baseline. Log what your supplier actually quoted and the tool tracks the gap — after a handful of entries you know whether your market runs ten percent over or under, which is the number that makes every other estimate on the site accurate for you.

Field tools — frequently asked questions

Do these tools work without installing an app?
Yes. Every one of them runs in the browser you are already using. There is nothing to install, no account, and no permissions beyond the specific sensor a given tool needs — the level asks for motion, the camera overlay asks for the camera, the analyser asks for the microphone, and the rest ask for nothing at all.
Do they work with no signal on site?
Once a page has loaded it keeps working offline, because all the computation happens in the browser and there is no server to call. Basements, plant rooms and steel-framed buildings are exactly where a phone loses signal and where these are most useful, so it is worth opening the page before you go in.
Is any of my data — sensor readings, photos, audio — uploaded?
No. This site is entirely static: there is no backend, no database and no upload endpoint to send anything to. Photos are drawn into a canvas in the page, audio frames are analysed and discarded, and orientation readings are converted to an angle on screen. What you log in the price index is stored in your own browser and nowhere else.
Which tools need a phone rather than a laptop?
The bubble level and the clinometer need real motion sensors, which laptops do not have — a desktop browser defines the API but never reports a reading, and both tools tell you so instead of showing a frozen bubble. The camera overlay needs a rear camera. The screen ruler, photo takeoff, 3D blueprint and price index all work on any device.
How accurate are phone-based measurements?
It depends entirely on which tool. A calibrated screen ruler is accurate to well under a millimetre. A phone used as a level resolves to a fraction of a degree but is limited by the flatness of its own case. A photo takeoff is within a few percent when the shot is square-on and much worse when it is angled. Each tool's page states its own boundary rather than offering a single blanket claim.
Why does iOS ask permission before the level works?
Since iOS 13, Safari requires a deliberate user gesture before a web page may read device orientation, because a continuous motion stream can be used to fingerprint a device. The Enable Motion Sensors button is that gesture; there is no way for a page to bypass it, and any site claiming otherwise is not doing what it says.
Can these replace proper instruments?
For layout, checking, ordering and getting a number when you do not have the right tool in your hand — yes, and that is most of a working day. For anything that has to be certified, set out structurally, or defended to an inspector, use the calibrated instrument the job calls for. Every tool here states where it stops being trustworthy.
What happens to the measurement once I have it?
Each tool links to the calculators that turn its reading into a quantity — a pitch into rafter lengths, a photo dimension into paint or tile, a slab model into concrete volume. That chain is the point: the measurement is only the first half of the job.
