How to use the Screen Ruler & Protractor

  1. Find an ID-1 card

    Any bank card, driving licence or hotel key card. ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 is 85.60 mm wide worldwide, which is what makes it a reliable reference.

  2. Hold it against the screen

    Place the card over the calibration bar so its left edge sits on the zero mark.

  3. Slide until the edges match

    Drag the slider until the bar is exactly as wide as the card. The ruler's pixels-per-inch is now correct for this screen at this zoom level.

  4. Switch units and measure

    Toggle between millimetres and inches; the tick marks subdivide to sixteenths on the imperial scale.

  5. Use the protractor for angles

    Switch to protractor mode and rotate the arm to match the angle you are checking against the screen edge.

Where this tool stops

You can only measure what fits on the screen — roughly 150 mm on a phone. Recalibrate after changing browser zoom, which silently rescales everything.

Screen Ruler & Protractor — frequently asked questions

Why do I need to calibrate an on-screen ruler?
Because a CSS pixel is not a fixed physical size. The browser assumes 96 pixels per inch as a reference, but real displays run anywhere from about 90 to over 500 pixels per inch, and browser zoom changes the ratio again. Without calibration an on-screen ruler is decorative. With it, it is genuinely accurate to well under a millimetre.
Why a bank card rather than a coin or a ruler?
Payment cards are manufactured to ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1: 85.60 × 53.98 mm, identical in every country. Coins differ by country and wear down; a printed ruler may itself be scaled by the printer. The card is the one object almost everyone carries whose size is guaranteed.
Does the calibration stick between visits?
It is stored in this browser, so returning to the page on the same device keeps your setting. Changing browser zoom or moving to a different device means calibrating again, since both change the pixel-to-millimetre relationship.
How long a measurement can I actually take?
As much as your screen shows — around 150 mm on a phone in portrait, 250 mm on a tablet, more on a laptop. For anything longer, mark the workpiece at the screen's full length and step along it, or use the photo takeoff tool with a card in the shot.
Is the imperial scale in sixteenths?
Yes. The inch scale subdivides to sixteenths with the usual descending tick heights for halves, quarters and eighths, so it reads like a tape rather than a decimal scale.
How accurate is the protractor?
It is exact as a geometric protractor — the arm's angle is computed, not drawn by hand. The error is in how squarely you hold the workpiece against the screen, which is the same limitation any physical protractor has.
Will measuring on my screen scratch it?
Hold the object against the glass rather than dragging it, and avoid anything with a grit or metal edge. A card is harmless; a steel rule is not.
Can I use it for drill bit or fastener sizing?
Yes — laying a bit or a screw against the calibrated scale is one of the things it is best at, because those are small enough to fit comfortably on any screen and the metric scale resolves to the millimetre.
