How to use the Tape Measure Calculator

  2. Add or subtract it

    Enter adds, Shift+Enter subtracts. Each entry lands on the strip with the running total beside it.

  3. Fix mistakes in place

    Remove any single line and the total recomputes — no clearing nine entries because the fourth was wrong.

  4. Lay out equal spaces

    Give the layout helper a space count and mark every figure it lists from one tape hook — the last mark is always the exact total, so rounding never stacks up in the final bay.

Where this tool stops

Fractions are tape fractions — halves down to sixty-fourths. Thirds and other non-binary fractions are refused rather than approximated, because a tape cannot hold them and pretending otherwise moves the error onto your pencil.

Why does it refuse 1/3?
Because no tape carries thirds. The tool works in exact sixty-fourths, which represents every fraction on a real tape — halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths, thirty-seconds, sixty-fourths — and nothing else. Converting a third to 21/64 silently would put a 1/192 error into your line and hide it.
How is this different from using decimals on a phone calculator?
Two conversions and a rounding each way. 7/8 becomes 0.875 cleanly, but 0.87 typed from memory is 55.68/64, and after four additions nobody knows which sixteenth to mark. Here the fraction arithmetic is exact integers end to end, and the decimal and millimetre views are computed from the exact total, not the other way round.
What does the equal-spacing helper actually give me?
Running marks from a single tape hook. Dividing 12' into five bays gives 28.8 inches a bay — unmarkable. The helper rounds each running mark to the nearest 1/16, keeps the final mark exact, and because every figure is measured from the same hook, pencil error never accumulates from bay to bay the way measure-and-step does.
Does it handle negative results?
Yes — subtract more than you have and the total shows the shortfall with a minus sign rather than clamping to zero. Knowing you are 3/4 inch short is the useful answer.

A reading on its own does not order material. These calculators take what you just measured and give you quantities, cuts or cost.
