Everything below is computed from the prices you enter, compared against the published baselines this site ships with. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

How to use the Local Price Index

  1. Pick a material

    Choose from the materials the site already prices, so your entry can be compared against a baseline.

  2. Enter the price you were quoted

    Use the unit shown. A delivered price and a collected price are different numbers — be consistent about which you log.

  3. Build up a few entries

    One quote is an anecdote. Several across suppliers and weeks is a market position.

  4. Read the variance

    The summary shows how your logged prices compare with the national baseline, as a percentage.

  5. Apply it to your estimates

    If your market runs consistently above baseline, apply that percentage to the cost figures elsewhere on the site.

Where this tool stops

This is your own journal, not a crowd-sourced average. With no server there is no way to pool data between users, and implying otherwise would misrepresent where the numbers come from.

Local Price Index — frequently asked questions

Is this a crowd-sourced price index?
No, and it is important to be straight about that. The site is fully static with no server and no database, so there is nowhere to pool entries from different users. This is a private journal held in your browser. Calling it a community average would imply data that does not exist.
Where do the baseline prices come from?
They are the built-in national reference figures used by the cost estimates on the calculators, adjusted for the market you have selected. They are a starting point, which is precisely why logging your real quotes is worth doing.
How many entries before the variance means anything?
Three or four for a single material starts to show a pattern; a single quote tells you about one supplier on one day. Prices for timber and steel in particular move enough that a stale entry is worse than none.
Where is my data stored?
In this browser's local storage on this device. It is not transmitted anywhere. Clearing site data, or using a different browser or device, means starting again — there is no account to sync it to.
Should I log delivered or collected prices?
Either, as long as you are consistent. Delivery on aggregates and concrete can be a large share of the cost, so mixing the two produces a variance figure that reflects your logging habits rather than the market.
Does the logged price change the calculators' cost estimates?
Not automatically. The journal shows you the gap; you apply it. Silently rewriting every cost estimate from a handful of personal entries would make the site's figures unreproducible and hard to sanity-check.
Can I export my journal?
The entries live in browser storage and can be cleared from the page. For a permanent record, keep quotes with the job file — this tool is for spotting the local pattern, not for record-keeping.
Why does my region matter?
Material prices vary far more by region than most estimating guides admit — freight distance, local demand and regional supply all move them. Setting the region gives the comparison a meaningful baseline rather than a national blend.

A reading on its own does not order material. These calculators take what you just measured and give you quantities, cuts or cost.
