Job takeoff
Standing seam metal roof takeoff
Panels, clips, thermal movement and underlayment for a lean-to or a plain gable of a concealed-fix metal roof.
A takeoff is the trade word for the shopping list a job produces — every material, and how much of each, worked out by its own cited calculator.

Estimates, not a quote. Each row gives its base, the allowance on top, the adjusted figure and what to order; change an allowance on the row, or open its reasoning to see every figure it rests on. A trade's own page carries what it does not cover — open the one you are about to order against.

About this job
A standing seam roof is a set of long panels that are deliberately not fixed down. They are held by clips that let each panel slide as it heats and cools, which is why the movement row on this page is a design check rather than a curiosity: a 12 m panel in a climate that swings 60 °C moves by several millimetres, and a roof detailed as though it did not will oil-can, tear at its fixings or buckle at the ridge.
The panel count comes from the eave length divided by the coverage width, and coverage width is not the same as panel width — the seam eats part of each panel. Getting those two confused is a whole extra panel on a modest roof and several on a long one. The panel calculator counts one slope at a time, so the page runs it once for each slope: a plain gable is two matching slopes, and its second slope has a panel row and a clip row of its own; a lean-to has one slope and no second rows. The clips count the panels their slope's panel row gives, so they follow the eave and the coverage width without being retyped. The underlayment row covers every slope at once. A roof whose slopes differ in size, or has more than two, is taken off one slope at a time. The movement row is per panel and the same on every slope, so it is not doubled.
Clip spacing is a wind question. The default here is a spacing, not a specification: the real number comes from the panel maker's tested assembly at your building's exposure and height, and it tightens sharply at the perimeter and the corners where uplift is worst.
How each line reads
- Base
- What the calculator gives for these dimensions, before anything is added.
- Allowance
- Cutting waste, a lap or spare stock — named, with where it comes from, and changeable on the row.
- Adjusted
- The base with its allowance on top.
- Order
- What to buy: the adjusted figure in whole boards, bags, rolls or lengths.
The order this happens in
Quantities do not tell you the sequence, and on this job the sequence is where the money goes wrong.
- Check the deck is flat and the substrate is even; a standing seam telegraphs every ripple along its length.
- Run a high-temperature underlayment — an ordinary felt cooks under metal.
- Set the first panel dead square to the eave. Every panel after it repeats the angle of the first.
- Fix the clips at the spacing, with the fixed point where the detail puts it and free movement everywhere else.
- Seam as you go rather than at the end, so the panels stay at their set spacing.
- Detail the ridge, eave and rake to allow the movement the panels will make.
What this takeoff does not cover
- Flashings, closures, ridge and eave trims, and every penetration.
- The clip spacing your wind zone actually requires, which is a tested assembly rather than a default.
- Snow retention, which is designed from the slope, the panel and the ground snow load.
- The substrate and its ability to hold the clip fastener.
- Panel finish, coating warranty and the compatibility of every metal it touches — mixing metals is how a metal roof fails early.

- Which calculators does the standing seam roof takeoff run?
- 4 calculators, for 6 lines: Metal Roof Panel Calculator, Standing Seam Metal Roof Clip Count Calculator, Standing Seam Roof Thermal Movement Calculator, Roofing Underlayment Calculator. Each has a page of its own with its formula and its sources; the takeoff runs them all on one set of dimensions.
- What does the standing seam roof takeoff leave out?
- 5 things, each named on this page: Flashings, closures, ridge and eave trims, and every penetration; The clip spacing your wind zone actually requires, which is a tested assembly rather than a default; Snow retention, which is designed from the slope, the panel and the ground snow load; The substrate and its ability to hold the clip fastener; Panel finish, coating warranty and the compatibility of every metal it touches.
- Can I check a quote for this job against the takeoff?
- Yes. The standing seam roof quote check reads a quote's lines against these same calculators and your measurements, and reports what it leaves out, what it adds and what to ask. It reads quantities, never prices.
