Bulk material conversions & haulage

Volume to weight and back, for the materials that arrive loose on a truck.

What this covers

Cubic yards to tons and tons to cubic yards for aggregates, soils, asphalt, mulch, compost and demolition arisings, in both directions, plus the odd units a yard actually sells in — bags, cords, board feet, wheelbarrow loads — and the truck counts that follow.

What decides which one you need

Density, and nothing else. Every calculator here is the same arithmetic over a different bulk density, so the one to open is the one named after the material in front of you: dry sand and saturated sand differ by roughly 20%, and crushed concrete differs from crushed limestone by more than the waste allowance you would add on top. Where a density depends on how the material was placed, the page says so rather than averaging it away.

What this does not cover

How much of it you need. These convert a quantity you already have; the quantity itself comes from excavation and earthworks, or from the calculator for the thing you are building.
