How deep should slate chippings go?
Shallower than rounded aggregate, because the flat pieces overlap and cover well. Extra depth adds cost without improving appearance and makes the surface less stable underfoot.
Do slate chippings stay in place?
Better than rounded stone, since flat pieces interlock and lie flat rather than rolling. Edging is still worth having, but migration is less of a problem than with pea gravel.
Why does slate look different when dry?
Because wet slate shows a much deeper colour. Samples are almost always seen wet, so the dry appearance on site can come as a surprise — check a dry sample before committing to a large area.
