What this calculation does not cover
- A yard of slate weighs much what a yard of building sand or dense-graded crushed limestone weighs — the flat shape changes how far the material covers, not how heavy a yard of it is. A skip or a lorry therefore reaches its weight limit with room still showing in it, and the figure that governs is the payload the supplier states for that container and that vehicle.
- A cubic yard of slate is not a fixed weight of slate. How the plates were placed, and what has walked on them since, both change how much slate a yard holds, and this conversion is one number across all of it. Where the weight has to be right rather than close, have the load weighed — a yardage measured on site carries a spread this figure cannot show.
- A load taken out of an existing bed is not a load of slate. Soil works down among the plates over the years and comes up with them, and under a trafficked area some of the stone beneath comes with it — wet compacted soil converts close to slate's own figure and a crushed-stone sub-base converts above it, so there is no reason to expect the mixed load to weigh less per yard than the slate alone. Convert the slate fraction here and the rest at its own density.
