What this calculation does not cover
- Coverage assumes an even depth over level ground. Hollows, edges that need a deeper run and a membrane that rucks all take more than a flat calculation allows, so carry an allowance over the average depth rather than deepening the whole bed to suit its worst section — that buys one corner at the cost of slate everywhere.
- Not all of a load ends up as visible depth. Slate is barrowed and shovelled into place, and what goes into the grass, under the edging or into the border alongside is covering nothing; on soft ground the first plates press into the subgrade rather than adding to the surface. Where the converted volume only just meets the area at the depth you want, on site it will not.
- Topping up rather than laying new, divide by the depth you are adding, not the depth of the finished bed. The old slate is still in place — settled lower and broken smaller, but still there — so this volume only has to bring the surface back up, and at that shallower depth it goes over far more ground than the same tonnage laid as a new bed.
