Crushed limestone is the workhorse sub-base material across much of North America, specified as a compacted thickness and sold by the ton. The conversion has to account for the fact that dense-graded material is designed to compact hard: the loose yardage that arrives is meaningfully more than the yardage that ends up in place, because the fines migrate into the voids under a roller. Ordering against the compacted requirement without allowing for that loss leaves the sub-base under specification, which shows up years later as settlement rather than immediately as a shortfall.

Why does limestone compact so much?
Because dense grading is designed for it. The range of particle sizes lets fines fill the voids between larger stones under compaction, producing a dense interlocked layer. That is what makes it a good sub-base, and it is why loose volume exceeds in-place volume.
Is crusher run the same thing?
Broadly, crusher run describes unscreened material straight from the crusher including its dust, which is dense-graded by nature. Named products vary regionally, so confirm the gradation rather than relying on the name.
How thick should a sub-base be?
