Why is a gravel driveway built in three different stone layers instead of one thick lift of the same material?
Each layer does a different structural job: large angular base stone (typically 50-75 mm clean or crusher run) bridges soft subgrade and spreads wheel loads; a mid layer of 20-25 mm compacts into the voids and locks the base; and the top course of 10-20 mm crushed fines gives the tight running surface that sheds water. Skipping straight to surface gravel on soil is the classic failure — the stone migrates down and mud pumps up within a season or two.
Does gravel density really vary that much?
Yes — density depends on the stone type and how compacted it is. This uses a widely-cited average; ask your supplier for their specific material's density for a more precise order.
Do I need a fabric weed barrier under the gravel?
Many installers recommend a geotextile fabric layer to prevent gravel from sinking into the subsoil over time and to reduce weed growth — a separate material from the gravel itself.
