In most climates and soil types, yes — it improves drainage and reduces the chance of cracking from frost heave or soil movement. Sandy, well-draining soil in mild climates sometimes skips it; check local practice.
How thick should a driveway be for larger vehicles like RVs?
Consider 5-6 in (~0.13-0.15 m) or more for driveways that will regularly carry RVs, trucks, or other heavy vehicles, versus 4 in (~0.1 m) for standard passenger cars.
