Why is mixed plaster so much heavier than the bag?
Because the mix water is a large share of the finished weight. A bag that one person carries easily becomes a considerably heavier bucket once gauged, which matters when it has to go up a stair or a tower.
Should I order by bag or by volume?
By bag, using the manufacturer's stated coverage at your intended thickness. That figure already accounts for the product's own behaviour and is more reliable than converting a volume.
Can plaster be retempered?
No. Unlike sand-cement mortar, gypsum plaster that has begun to set cannot be brought back with water — the set is chemical and irreversible. Mix only what can be applied in the working window.
