Converting a plaster tonnage into volume is mostly a planning question for larger jobs. The binding constraint on plaster is never the quantity but the working time: once mixed it has a limited window before it goes off, and unlike mortar it cannot be retempered at all — gypsum that has begun to set is finished. That means plaster is mixed in batches sized to what can be applied, and a day's tonnage tells you about deliveries rather than about mixing.

How much wall will this cover?
Work from the manufacturer's coverage per bag at your specified thickness rather than from tonnage. Backgrounds vary in suction, and a thirsty substrate consumes noticeably more than a sealed one.
Does background affect quantity?
Considerably. High-suction backgrounds draw water and material, which is why they are usually treated or primed first — both to control the set and to reduce the amount of plaster absorbed.
What happens to plaster waste?
Gypsum waste is generally segregated from general construction waste, because in landfill it can generate hydrogen sulphide under anaerobic conditions. Most disposal routes treat it as a separate stream.
