Wood chip is the lightest bulk material most sites deal with, roughly a fifth the weight of aggregate per cubic yard, which is why it is sold by volume almost without exception. Converting to weight is a haulage question rather than an ordering one: a trailer will run out of space long before it runs out of payload, and the constraint on moving chip is always cubic capacity. Fresh green chip is heavier than seasoned, since much of the weight is water, and it also composts as it dries, losing volume in the process.

Frequently asked questions

Why is wood chip sold by volume?
Because its weight varies enormously with moisture and species while its volume is what determines coverage and transport. A ton of green chip and a ton of seasoned chip are very different quantities of material.
Does chip need topping up?
Yes, more often than bark. Chip breaks down relatively quickly, especially fine material, so paths and beds need periodic replenishment as the layer composts and thins.
Can fresh chip go straight onto beds?
Around established plants as a surface mulch, generally yes. Dug into soil it can temporarily lock up nitrogen as it decomposes, which is why it belongs on top rather than mixed in.
