A tonnage of wood chip converts to a large volume, which is the point worth understanding before arranging transport or storage. The material also changes over time in a way aggregates do not: green chip loses water and volume as it seasons and begins to compost, generating heat in the process. Large stockpiles of fresh chip can self-heat significantly, which is a genuine fire consideration on storage as well as a reason the pile shrinks. Plan the space for the delivered volume rather than the settled one.

Frequently asked questions

Will a ton of chip fit in my trailer?
By weight easily, by volume almost certainly not — a ton is a very large pile. Convert to cubic yards and check that against the trailer's capacity, because volume is always the binding constraint with chip.
Do wood chip piles really heat up?
Fresh chip in a large heap composts and generates real heat, which is a recognised fire risk in bulk storage. Smaller piles, turning, and not storing green chip against buildings all reduce it.
Why did my delivery shrink?
Because it is drying and composting. Green chip loses both water weight and volume over weeks, so a pile measured on arrival will not measure the same a month later.
