What this calculation does not cover
- Spread over an area this volume gives an average depth, and neither the ground below it nor the stone above is flat. Hollows in the subgrade take stone that shows as no depth at all, and a coarse grade cannot form a layer much thinner than its own stones.
- An area scaled off a plan is the flat projection, not the surface being covered. On a bank the stone has to reach across the slope length, and a 1 in 2 face is more than a tenth longer than its plan measure.
- River rock is a natural gravel from one deposit, so colour and size spread shift between loads more than a crushed product's does. Where this volume only just covers the area, take it in one delivery — a bed finished off a second load usually reads as two beds.
