What this calculation does not cover
- Part of any tonnage bought is water. A load taken in wet weather carries more of it, so it yields less volume than this figure and shrinks further as it dries — where a delivery has to fill a known space, buy by volume instead.
- How much of the delivered volume is still there at the end of the season depends on how far the material had rotted before it arrived. Coarse or immature compost has most left to be consumed and loses most bulk; dark, well-rotted material is comparatively stable. Two deliveries of the same tonnage can finish the season at different depths.
- Compost is specified as a share of the soil it is mixed into, not as a depth laid over it. Dividing this volume by a bed area answers a different question: the quantity turns on the depth of soil being worked, so the same tonnage serves a wide area worked shallow or a small one worked deep.
