Why does my compost pile shrink?
Because it continues to decompose. That reduction is organic matter being consumed rather than material settling, and it carries on after incorporation — which is what feeds the soil.
Will a ton fit in my van?
By weight comfortably; by volume probably not. Compost is light and bulky, so vehicle capacity rather than payload is nearly always the constraint.
Is bagged compost different?
Usually more consistent and more expensive per volume. Bulk is far better value for any substantial quantity, provided you can take delivery and have somewhere to keep it.
