How much compost should I add to a bed?
It is normally specified as a proportion of the soil volume being improved rather than as a covering depth, so work from the depth of soil being worked rather than from the surface area alone.
Is compost a substitute for topsoil?
No. Compost improves soil; it is not soil. Planting directly into pure compost gives poor structure and dries out quickly. It belongs mixed into a mineral soil rather than used alone.
Does compost quality vary?
Considerably. Well-rotted material is dark, crumbly and odourless; immature compost is coarse, can smell and can temporarily lock up nitrogen as it finishes decomposing. Buy on appearance rather than description where possible.
