What this calculation does not cover
- Compost takes up water and holds it far more readily than soil or stone. It is supplied damp rather than dry, so the swing is narrower than a dry-to-saturated comparison suggests, but an uncovered heap after wet weather still weighs enough more per cubic yard to push a load past its booked weight.
- A heap stood on bare ground does not end at the compost: the bottom bucket comes up mixed with soil and stone, both heavier than what was measured. On a large stockpile that is a minor share of the tonnage; on a small heap it is enough to put the weighbridge ticket over the calculated weight.
- At comparable moisture, composted bark is the lightest of the products sold as compost and spent mushroom compost the heaviest — mushroom compost is supplied wet and carries gypsum and chalk from the substrate. The ranges overlap, so ask the supplier what the product weighs per cubic yard rather than reading it off the name.
