Converting a sand tonnage back to volume tells you whether the load will bed the paving you have laid out. The bulking effect makes this less predictable than it looks: sand delivered damp will appear to be more than the conversion suggests and will shrink as it dries or is compacted. For bedding layers specified as a compacted thickness, order against the compacted requirement with an allowance on top, since screeded and vibrated sand occupies less volume than the loose material that arrived on the lorry.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my sand pile look bigger than the ticket says?
Bulking. Damp sand takes up more room than its dry volume, sometimes considerably. The tonnage on the ticket is the reliable figure; the apparent volume is not.
How much sand for a paving bed?
Work from the specified compacted bedding thickness across the paved area, then add for consolidation and for filling irregularities in the sub-base. Convert the total to weight if the supplier prices by the ton.
Can I use building sand for concrete?
It is not the right product. Building sand is fine and increases water demand; concreting or sharp sand has the grading concrete needs. Substituting weakens the mix.
