Frequently asked questions

Does moisture really change the weight much?
Substantially, for soil more than for most materials. Saturated topsoil can be a good deal heavier per cubic yard than the same soil dry, so a load bought by weight after heavy rain delivers less actual soil. Where possible, buy volume for soil, or agree the density in advance.
Is screened topsoil different from as-dug?
Yes. Screening removes stone and debris and produces a more consistent, usually lighter product. As-dug soil varies far more, and its density depends on what came out of the ground with it.
How deep should topsoil be?
Depends entirely on the planting. Lawn establishment typically wants a shallower layer than shrub beds, and trees need proper pits rather than depth across the whole area. Set the depth from what is being grown, then convert.
