Frequently asked questions

Why does the same material have different weights?
Moisture and compaction. Wet sand carries water in every void, and a compacted stone base has fewer voids than the same stone tipped loose. The swing between dry loose and wet compacted is routinely 25%, which is the difference between a legal load and an overweight one.
Which ton — metric or short?
Both are shown. A metric tonne is 1000 kg; a US short ton is 907 kg, about 10% lighter. Skip and truck limits are quoted in whichever the country uses, and confusing them is a 10% error in the direction that gets you turned away at the gate.
Can I use this for a floor loading check?
For the weight, yes. For whether the floor takes it, no — that depends on the structure, the span, how the load is distributed and what else is on the floor. A pile of material on a suspended slab is a point load question for an engineer, not an arithmetic one.
Why is mulch so much lighter than soil?
It is mostly air and organic fibre rather than mineral particles. Bark mulch runs around 400 kg/m³ against topsoil's 1300, so a truck that carries three cubic metres of soil will carry far more mulch by volume before it reaches its weight limit.
