Frequently asked questions

How many cubic feet in a cubic yard?
Twenty-seven. A yard is three feet, and three cubed is twenty-seven. That is the conversion people get wrong most often — dividing by three instead of by twenty-seven under-orders by a factor of nine.
How do I enter a depth in inches?
Switch the unit toggle to imperial and enter inches directly. If you are converting by hand, divide by twelve: 4 in is 0.333 ft, 6 in is 0.5 ft. Rounding 4 in to 0.4 ft over-orders by 20%, which on a large pour is a wasted delivery.
Should I order the exact figure?
No. Bulk material is delivered in whole units and subgrade is never perfectly level, so the low spots absorb more than the average depth predicts. The waste allowance here covers that; on a rough excavation raise it rather than ordering twice.
Does this work for a circular or irregular area?
Not directly — this is length by width. For a circle, work out the area separately (π × radius²) and treat that as one side against a depth. For an irregular shape, split it into rectangles and add the results.
