Millings are the material generated by planing an existing asphalt surface, and they are increasingly used as a driveway surface in their own right rather than being treated as waste. Loose millings convert at a lower density than compacted asphalt because the planing process leaves them broken and open. Once laid and rolled — particularly in warm weather, when the residual binder softens and re-knits — they consolidate significantly, so the volume ordered has to exceed the finished volume by a meaningful margin.

Frequently asked questions

Are millings the same as new asphalt?
No. They are planed-up old surfacing, so the binder is aged and the material is broken. They compact and partially re-bind but do not perform like fresh hot mix, and they are not a substitute where a specified surface course is required.
Do millings make a good driveway?
For a low-traffic domestic drive they can work well and cost considerably less than new asphalt, provided they are laid on a sound base and properly compacted. They will not match new surfacing for durability or appearance.
Why do millings set harder in summer?
Because residual bitumen softens in heat and re-knits under compaction. The same material laid in cold conditions stays loose, which is why timing matters more for millings than for ordinary aggregate.
