Converting a millings tonnage to volume is how you check whether a load will surface the area you have. The behaviour that distinguishes millings from ordinary aggregate is that they partially re-bind: the old bitumen still present softens in the sun and, under compaction, knits the surface together into something firmer than loose stone. Frequently asked questions

How much area will this tonnage cover?
Convert to volume and divide by the area for a loose depth, then reduce for compaction. Millings consolidate appreciably, so the finished depth is meaningfully less than the spread depth.
Do millings need a binder?
Not necessarily — the residual bitumen provides some binding under compaction and warmth. Where a firmer surface is wanted, a bituminous emulsion can be applied, which moves the cost closer to conventional surfacing.
Are millings environmentally preferable?
Reusing them avoids both landfill and new material production, which is a genuine benefit. They are among the most recycled construction materials, and using them locally avoids haulage as well.
