Why is steel specified by weight per foot?
Because weight is what governs both cost and structural capacity, and sections of the same nominal depth come in several weights. A W12x40 and a W12x65 are the same nominal depth and very different members.
How heavy is a cubic foot of steel?
About 490 pounds, roughly three times concrete. It is why a compact steel assembly can exceed a crane's capacity while looking easily liftable.
Does grade change the density?
Barely. Structural steel grades differ in strength rather than density, so a higher-grade section of the same size weighs essentially the same but carries more load.
