What this calculation does not cover
- A ton of fill sand delivered damp spreads to more loose cubic yards than this conversion returns, because the water films between the grains hold them apart. The same ton occupies less as it dries out, so a pile that looks ample on the day it arrives is not evidence the order was right — the ticket weight is.
- Fill sand's usual job is a pipe surround, and that volume is not length by width by depth: the pipe displaces part of it, while the over-break the bucket leaves outside the drawn trench width adds more back. The two do not cancel to anything predictable, so check this volume against the trench as dug rather than as drawn.
- This volume converts the same whether the sand ends up well placed or badly placed, and in a pipe haunch, behind a wall or in a trench too narrow to work in, it is usually placed badly — a plate compactor has nowhere to sit, so those zones want thinner lifts and a rammer or trench compactor instead. Ordering the right quantity does not prevent the settlement that follows when they do not get one.

The figure to hold in mind is that compaction takes a meaningful fraction of it: sand placed in layers and vibrated occupies less space than the loose delivered material, and backfill that is not compacted settles later, taking whatever is above it down as well. Trench reinstatement failures are frequently a compaction problem rather than a material one.
