Converting a fill sand tonnage into volume tells you how much backfill a load provides. The figure to hold in mind is that compaction takes a meaningful fraction of it: sand placed in layers and vibrated occupies less space than the loose delivered material, and backfill that is not compacted settles later, taking whatever is above it down as well. Trench reinstatement failures are frequently a compaction problem rather than a material one.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fill my trench?
Convert to volume, then add for compaction. Backfill placed loose and left to settle produces the depressions you see over old trenches; compacting in layers avoids them and consumes more material.
Why does backfill settle?
Because loose material densifies over time under its own weight and traffic. Compacting during placement does that work up front instead of leaving it to happen under a finished surface.
Can I use site-won material instead?
Sometimes, if it is suitable and free of organics and oversized stone. Clay-rich spoil compacts poorly and holds water, which is why imported sand is often specified even where excavated material is available.
