Turning an asphalt tonnage back into volume is how you check whether a quoted load will actually achieve the specified compacted depth over the area. The answer depends on compaction, which is where estimates go wrong: the same tonnage laid and rolled properly covers less area at the correct thickness than the same tonnage spread thin. Because asphalt thickness governs how the surface carries load, making the material stretch by laying it thinner is a false economy that shortens the life of the surface considerably rather than saving money.

Will this tonnage cover my drive?
Convert to volume, divide by the area, and compare against the specified compacted thickness. If it falls short, order more rather than laying thinner — thickness is what carries the load.
Why is asphalt sold by weight?
Because it is produced and transported hot in weighed loads, and weight is what a plant and a weighbridge can verify. Volume changes with temperature and compaction; weight does not.
Does leftover asphalt keep?
Not usefully. Hot mix must be laid and compacted within its temperature window, so surplus on site is generally waste. That makes accurate ordering more important than for materials that can be stockpiled.
