How deep should pea gravel go?
Shallower than you might expect for a walking surface, since depth makes it harder to walk on. Decorative beds and drainage layers have their own requirements driven by the function rather than by appearance.
Why does it seem to disappear?
It migrates into soft ground and spreads past unrestrained edges. A geotextile separator underneath and proper edging solve both, and are cheaper than repeatedly topping up.
Is pea gravel good for drainage?
Very, because rounded uniform stone has large open voids. That is why it is used around perforated drainage pipe, where free flow matters more than load-bearing capacity.
