What this calculation does not cover
- Divide the volume by the area and the depth that comes out has a floor: rounded single-size stone is a scattering until it is several stone diameters deep. Below that the membrane shows through, and raking will not fix it.
- A quoted tonnage is a fixed quantity — a minimum load, a whole number of bulk bags — so the volume it converts to is what you get, not what you choose. Check it covers before ordering, because a top-up load bought later shows as a patch.
- Surplus will not go in as extra depth. The layer finishes against a threshold, a paving lip or the top of the edging, and rounded stone laid proud of its restraint travels over it underfoot. Anything over that level has to go somewhere else.
