What this calculation does not cover
- The old mortar still stuck to the crushed concrete holds water in a way quarried rock does not, and any brick in the load holds more still. Order after a wet week and part of the tonnage is water, paid for by the ton.
- Order the whole tonnage in one call-off where the job allows. A make-up load comes off a different crush, so the shortfall volume converted at this figure can buy the wrong tonnage, and the two batches compact differently, leaving a layer that performs unevenly where they meet.
- Where the tonnage is met from arisings crushed on site rather than bought in, the feed has to exceed it. The magnet lifts ferrous steel and the screen takes off soil and fines, while timber leaves the stream only where someone is picking the belt or an air separator is fitted; everything pulled out is tonnage the job no longer has.

Recycled aggregate is crushed demolition arisings graded for reuse as sub-base and fill, and it converts slightly lighter than virgin crushed stone because the crushed concrete and brick within it are less dense than natural rock. It is substantially cheaper and avoids both landfill and quarrying, which is why specifications increasingly permit or require it. The trade-off is variability: what goes into it depends on what was demolished, so consistency between loads is lower than with quarried material.
