What this calculation does not cover
- This is loose volume; recycled aggregate is laid to a compacted depth. Crushed concrete and brick are weaker than the hard quarried rock this material usually substitutes for, and the soft particles break down further under the roller, so more of the tipped volume disappears than with a competent quarried aggregate of the same grading.
- A heap of crushed concrete does not stay loose. Left standing for weeks it binds into a crust, whether from cement that never fully hydrated or from lime carbonating in the pile, and that crust has to be broken back out with a bucket before this volume will spread to an even depth.
- Recycled material is sold as a coarse capping grade more often than as a fine sub-base grading, and the largest pieces in a coarse grade set the minimum layer thickness. Spread this volume at a depth the grade can actually be laid at, not at the thinnest one the arithmetic allows.
Estimated cost — your price

Where a formula follows a published standard, that standard and its edition are cited beside it on this page; where none governs, the page says so. Converting a recycled aggregate tonnage into volume works the same way as for virgin stone, with a slightly lower density. The question worth asking the supplier is what the material actually contains and how it is graded, since recycled products range from well-processed graded aggregate to barely sorted rubble. For structural sub-base the grading and contaminant limits matter as much as the price, and a specification that permits recycled material will normally set both.
