Frequently asked questions

How much mortar does a wall actually need?
More than joints appear to suggest. Both bed and perpend joints across a whole elevation add up to a meaningful share of the wall volume, and the proportion rises as unit size falls — small units mean more joints.
Does mix ratio change the density?
Only slightly. Richer and leaner sand-cement mixes differ modestly in density; the ratio matters far more for strength, workability and durability than for weight.
Can I mix mortar in advance?
Only within its working life. Once it begins to stiffen, adding water to bring it back weakens the mix substantially. Batch to the rate of laying rather than mixing ahead.
