Converting a mortar tonnage back to volume tells you how much wall it will build once the joint dimensions are known. Mortar has a working life that aggregates do not: once mixed it must be used before it stiffens, and retempering with extra water to extend it weakens the mix. That constraint means mortar is mixed in batches sized to the pace of laying, so the total tonnage matters less for delivery scheduling than for knowing how much sand and cement to have on site.

How much wall will this build?
It depends entirely on joint thickness and unit size, so work back from the wall area and joint dimensions rather than from tonnage alone. Small units with thick joints consume far more per square foot.
Should I buy premixed or site-mixed?
Premixed gives consistency and suits small quantities; site mixing is cheaper at volume and lets the mix be adjusted. Consistency of colour across an elevation is a strong argument for premixed on visible work.
Why does mortar colour vary between batches?
Because sand colour, mix ratio and water content all vary between batches. On visible brickwork that shows as banding, which is why consistent batching and a single sand source matter.
