Fire protection calculators
Passive fire protection is quantified by a rating rather than by a room. The question is never how big the wall is — it is what the wall has to achieve for how long, which decides the layers, the thickness and every penetration's treatment separately.

How fire protection is measured
Volume for sealants and collars per penetration, thickness at a section factor for coatings to steel, and counts of layers or boards for a rated construction. Detection is spacing-based: a coverage radius per device against a ceiling's geometry.

What gets left off a fire protection order
- Penetrations. Every pipe, cable and duct through a rated element is its own detail, its own product and its own certificate.
- Cavity barriers at every compartment line and around every opening in a cavity — linear work that appears on no elevation.
- The section factor for steel. Two members of the same weight take different thicknesses of coating depending on their shape and exposure.
- Junctions: where a rated wall meets a floor, a roof or another wall is where most failures are found.
Job takeoffs4
Where passive-fire installers meet the rest of the job: each runs one of these calculators, with every other trade in the same job beside it.
