What this covers

Glass weight and lifting limits; insulating glass units — spacer, argon fill, perimeter; structural silicone bite; balustrades and glass fins; rough openings for windows, doors and skylights; unitised systems with their mullion loads, stack joints and condensation checks; and the performance figures a specification asks for, including U-factor, effective shading coefficient, acoustic and blast rating.

What decides which one you need

Whether the glass is carrying anything. A window is an opening problem — size the hole, count the units, allow for the gasket. A balustrade, a fin or a structurally glazed panel is a stress problem, and those calculators want the load and the support condition because the glass is a structural member.

What this does not cover

The flashing that keeps water out of the opening, which is roofing, and the opaque cladding beside the glazing.
