Frequently asked questions

Why subtract the pipe's volume?
The pipe itself occupies space in the trench — backfill only needs to fill the remaining void around and above it.
Why order more loose material than the void volume?
Loose material has more air gaps between particles than the same material once compacted — you need extra loose volume to end up with a properly densified fill after compaction.
Does this include bedding material below the pipe?
Not separately — bedding is typically a distinct, finer material placed first; treat it as part of the overall backfill void if using the same material throughout.
