Frequently asked questions

Why does a diagonal lay waste so much more?
Because every perimeter tile is cut at 45°, and the triangular offcut from one edge almost never fits anywhere else. On a straight lay the offcut from one wall often completes the opposite wall. That is the whole difference between a 10% and an 18% allowance.
Should I order extra beyond the waste allowance?
Yes — a box. Dye lots vary between production batches, so a tile bought in three years will not match. One spare box, stored flat and dry, is the difference between an invisible repair and re-tiling a room after a leak.
Do I deduct doorways and fixtures?
Deduct large permanent things — a bath, a fitted island. Do not deduct doorways or small obstructions: you will cut a tile to fit around them anyway, and the deduction removes material you still need.
