Why does each perimeter position waste half a tile?
In a 45° diagonal layout, the tiles that meet the room's straight walls must be cut along the diagonal, producing a triangular piece. On average, roughly half of each perimeter tile's area is cut away as waste.
How does this relate to the standard tile layout calculator?
This calculator only adds the extra waste area caused specifically by diagonal corner cuts — you still need a base tile count from a standard tile layout calculation, then add this extra area (converted to additional tiles) on top of it.
Does tile shape affect this estimate?
This assumes a square tile. For a rectangular tile, using the longer side as the tile size gives a more conservative (higher) estimate of perimeter cut positions.
