Frequently asked questions

Why does dividing the area by the sheet size understate it?
Because sheets come in one size and openings do not. A wall 3.1 metres high needs two sheets stacked with a large offcut from the second, and unless that offcut fits somewhere else it is a whole sheet used. Area division assumes perfect nesting; real cutting rarely achieves it, which is why the count is higher than the arithmetic suggests.
Does panel orientation matter?
For structural sheathing, yes — the face grain or strand direction is designed to span the supports, and the panel's rated span depends on it. Turning a sheet to save material can invalidate the rating. Where a drawing specifies orientation, the nesting options are narrower than the raw geometry allows.
Should I leave a gap between sheets?
Most sheathing applications specify one — commonly a few millimetres at edges and ends — because wood panels expand with moisture and butted panels buckle. It also changes the layout: with a gap, sheets do not tile a wall exactly, and a run of several sheets covers slightly more than their nominal width.
What about the edges between supports?
Unsupported panel edges either need blocking behind them or, in some roof applications, H-clips between sheets. Without either, the edges deflect independently and the joint telegraphs through the finish — or, on a roof, becomes a soft spot underfoot. Neither is included in a sheet count and both are required by the specification that set the panel thickness.
