What this covers

Studs, joists, rafters and trusses; roof geometry from ridge to birdsmouth — common, hip, valley, gambrel, mansard and dormer; engineered products from I-joists to glulam and CLT; sheathing and its nailing; and the modifiers timber design turns on, including load duration, char depth and cross-grain shrinkage.

What decides which one you need

Cutting or counting. A cutlist calculator wants geometry — pitch, span, overhang — and gives you lengths and angles to mark out. A sizing calculator wants load and span and gives you a member that works. Roof framing lives here rather than under roofing because it is the carpenter's work, not the roofer's.

What this does not cover

What goes on top of the rafters — coverings, underlayment and flashing are roofing — and the light-gauge steel version of the same framing, which is under structural steel.

Board Foot Calculator

Work out the board feet in a piece of lumber — the unit hardwood is priced in, and the one nominal sizes hide.

Imperial / Metric

Dormer Rafter Length Calculator

Calculate common rafter length for a dormer roof, including overhang, from the dormer's own width and pitch.

Imperial / Metric

I-Joist Minimum Depth Selector

Estimate a minimum I-joist depth from a span/depth ratio rule of thumb — a pre-check, not a substitute for manufacturer span tables.

Imperial / Metric

Timber Post Bearing Area Calculator

Calculate the minimum bearing area required where a timber post bears on a beam, based on allowable perpendicular-to-grain stress.

Imperial / Metric

Purlin Row Spacing Calculator

Calculate the number of purlin rows needed along a rafter run given a maximum allowable purlin spacing.

Imperial / Metric

Stud Calculator

Count the studs, plates and corner framing for a wall run at 16 or 24 inch (400 or 600 mm) centres, including openings.

Imperial / Metric

Timber Cross-Grain Shrinkage Calculator

How far timber moves across the grain between its moisture at fixing and in service, for one member and stacked up a platform-framed building.

Imperial / Metric

Timber Shear Connector Count Calculator

How many split-ring or shear-plate connector units a joint needs: its design load divided by one unit's rated capacity from the NDS tables or maker's data.

Imperial / Metric

Wood Truss Camber Calculator

Estimate the recommended manufactured upward camber for a wood truss from its calculated dead-load deflection.
