Why add 1 to the ceiling division?
Purlin rows include one at each end of the run (typically at the eave and at the ridge) plus intermediate rows in between — dividing the run by the max spacing gives the number of gaps needed, and there's always one more row than there are gaps.
What sets the maximum allowable purlin spacing?
It depends on the roofing material being supported (metal panel, tile battens, corrugated sheet) and its own span rating between supports, as well as the structural design for the loads the purlins carry — always use the value specified by your roofing material manufacturer or structural drawings.
Is the roof run measured horizontally or along the slope?
Along the slope — purlins run perpendicular to the rafters up the actual roof surface, so the spacing calculation should use the sloped run length (not the horizontal projection) to get an accurate row count.
