Frequently asked questions

Why does a click floor need an expansion gap?
Because the floor is a single floating sheet that moves with temperature and humidity, and it is not fixed down. Without 8-12 mm at every perimeter and every fixed obstruction it has nowhere to go, and it lifts in the middle — the peaking that people mistake for a subfloor problem. The gap is covered by skirting or beading, not by the floor.
How much waste should I really allow?
Seven percent in a plain rectangular room, because the end offcut from one row starts the next. Twelve where there are alcoves, islands or several doorways, which break that chain. Eighteen for a diagonal or herringbone lay, where every row starts and ends with a cut.
Do I need underlay?
Usually, unless the planks have it pre-attached. It evens out minor substrate variation, adds acoustic performance and, on a ground floor or over concrete, carries the damp-proof membrane. Check what the plank already includes before buying it twice.
