Frequently asked questions

Does the direction I roll out underlayment change how many rolls I need?
Slightly, and sometimes decisively on narrow rooms. Underlayment seams should run perpendicular to the plank direction where the flooring manufacturer requires it, and rows cannot always use offcuts the way flooring itself can — a 1 m leftover strip is only reusable if it still spans a full run. Lay the rolls on paper for the room's actual geometry before ordering exactly the computed minimum; one extra roll is cheap against a stalled install.
Why round up to a whole roll?
Underlayment is only sold in full rolls, so any floor area beyond a whole number of rolls still requires purchasing the next full roll.
Does this account for seam overlap or trimming waste?
This estimates rolls from raw coverage area only. Trimming around the room's perimeter and any manufacturer-recommended seam overlap will use some of each roll beyond the stated coverage area, so buying one extra roll for a tight fit is common practice.
Where do I find my product's roll coverage area?
Check the roll's packaging or the manufacturer's spec sheet — coverage area is typically stated in ft² (commonly 100 ft²) and should be converted to m² if you are working in metric.
