Why does a paver patio need edging at all?
Edging (restraint) holds the outermost pavers in place, preventing them from spreading apart or shifting outward over time under foot traffic and freeze-thaw cycles — without it, the pattern can gradually loosen and open gaps.
Does this include the spikes/stakes to secure the edging?
No — most edging is secured with stakes spaced along its length (commonly every 12 in), a separate small hardware item typically included with or sold alongside the edging itself.
Plastic or metal edging — does it matter for this calculation?
No — both are commonly sold in similar stock lengths, so the section count is the same either way. Metal is generally more rigid and durable; plastic is less expensive and easier to cut and curve.
