Hot water supply lines lose the least heat when insulated (keeping water hotter longer and reducing wait time at the fixture), and pipes running through unheated spaces (basements, crawlspaces, garages, attics) are most at risk of freezing without it.
Does pipe diameter affect the sleeve length needed?
No — sleeve length is based on pipe run length regardless of diameter, though you do need to buy the correctly-sized sleeve diameter to match your specific pipe.
Does insulating pipes prevent freezing completely?
No — insulation slows heat loss but doesn't stop it entirely. In very cold, prolonged conditions, insulated pipes can still freeze without heat trace cable or adequate building heat; insulation extends the safe time, it doesn't guarantee prevention.
