Frequently asked questions

Does the termination bar keep water out?
No — it keeps the membrane in place. Its job is mechanical: clamping the membrane's top edge so wind and thermal movement cannot peel it off the upstand. Water is excluded by the sealant bead above the bar and, in a properly detailed job, by a counterflashing over the whole arrangement. Treating the bar as the waterproofing is a widespread and short-lived assumption.
How far apart should the fasteners be?
Close enough that the bar clamps continuously rather than bridging between points — commonly around 200 mm, and closer at corners and ends. But spacing is secondary to substrate: a correctly spaced fixing into soft render or a hollow block face has almost no pull-out capacity, and the right fixing for the material found on site matters more than the nominal centres.
Do I need a counterflashing over it?
In most durable details, yes. A bar with an exposed sealant bead is relying on that sealant as the sole line of defence, and sealant in a horizontal joint exposed to sun and standing water has a maintenance life of a few years. A counterflashing or cap sheds water over the bar and turns the sealant into a secondary defence rather than the only one.
How high should the upstand be?
High enough that water cannot back up over it, which is usually stated as a minimum height above the finished roof surface in the membrane manufacturer's details and in local practice. Where a threshold or a paved terrace reduces the available height, the answer is a different detail — a drainage channel, a raised threshold — rather than a lower upstand.
