Which way should coping fall?
Inward, toward the roof. It is counter-intuitive — shedding water away from the building sounds right — but outward fall runs every drop down the face of the wall, staining it and driving water into the joint under wind pressure. Inward fall puts the water where the roof is designed to handle it.
Why do coping joints matter more than the length?
Because they are where it fails. Metal coping expands and contracts measurably over a long parapet, and a run fixed rigidly at both ends buckles or tears its fixings out. Movement joints at the right spacing, with splice plates or standing seams rather than butted ends, are what makes a run last. The quantity of metal is the easy part.
Does coping need a drip on both edges?
Yes, and the outer one is the one that gets omitted. Without a drip the water clings to the underside of the coping and runs back to the wall face — the surface-tension path that produces the staining lines you see below parapets everywhere. A small return on the underside breaks it.
Can coping be sealed rather than jointed?
Only as a secondary defence. Sealant across a butted coping joint is a maintenance item measured in a few years, and it is being asked to accommodate movement it is not sized for. The joint should be designed to shed water mechanically — a cover plate, a standing seam — with sealant, if used at all, behind that rather than instead of it.
