Where does a roof expansion joint go?
Directly over the structural movement joint, and nowhere else. The joint exists because the building is designed to move at that line; the roof covering has to be able to move with it. A cover installed a metre off the structural line means the membrane spans a moving joint and the cover spans a static roof — the worst of both.
How much movement does it need to take?
Whatever the structural engineer specifies for that joint, which depends on the building's length, its structural system and the temperature range it will see. This is not derivable from the roof area, and a cover selected on width alone can bottom out in summer or pull open in winter.
Do I need one at every parapet?
No — expansion joints are structural, not decorative, and adding them where the structure is continuous introduces a weak point in the waterproofing for no benefit. Where a roof is very large and the structure has no joint, the answer is a discussion with the engineer, not an arbitrary joint in the covering.
What are the corners priced as?
As individual fabricated pieces. Internal corners, external corners, T-intersections and the terminations where a joint meets a parapet are all made units, not cut from a run. On a roof with a joint network rather than a single line, they are a substantial share of the cost and are missed by a linear take-off.
