Frequently asked questions

Why is the starter strip so important?
Because every course above it locks into the one below, so its angle propagates. A starter set from an uneven foundation puts a small error into course one and multiplies it up the wall — by the eaves the courses are visibly out of parallel with the soffit, and there is no way to correct it without stripping back. Strike a level line around the whole building first.
How high off the ground should it start?
High enough to stay clear of splashback and any expected snow line, and consistent all the way round. The temptation is to follow the ground, which on a sloping site produces a starter that is level nowhere. Follow a level line and let the gap to the ground vary — that is what the trim below is for.
Does the starter strip need to be continuous?
Effectively yes, along each elevation. Gaps in the starter leave the bottom edge of the first course unsupported, where it flutters in wind and eventually cracks or unclips. Butting lengths with a small expansion gap is normal; leaving a stretch out because it was awkward is not.
What goes behind it?
The water-resistive barrier, lapped so water runs outward over the top of anything below, and any furring the system needs. Siding is a rainscreen — it sheds most water and the barrier behind handles the rest — so what is behind the starter matters as much as the strip itself.
